A float sponsored by Unified Western Grocers in the 50th Annual Los Angeles Mexican Independence Day Parade won the coveted President’s Award — first place — in the competition.
The custom-made float, which celebrated the traditions of the various regions of Mexico with colorfully costumed participants, dancers and a mariachi band, was emblazoned with the theme “Los Mercaditos Independientes” and featured the Springfield and Golden Creme corporate brand symbols in prominent positions on both sides.
The Sept. 10 event took place over a two-mile parade route through East Los Angeles. In addition to more than 750,000 attendees who watched the event in person, an additional 3.5 million watched the event on KMEX-TV, Los Angeles’ leading Hispanic television station.
“The Springfield brand is very popular among Hispanics in Southern California and our participation in this event helped solidify our commitment to the community,” said JoAnn Murdock, executive director, corporate brands.
