Two Unified Buyers Recognized By Supermarket Business Magazine

(LOS ANGELES) — Two employees of Unified Western Grocers — Paul Bilton-Smith and Cindy Mulvaney — were named winners of Supermarket Business's first-ever "Most Valuable Buyers" competition. The two were identified in the Sept. 15, 2001 edition of the publication.

Bilton-Smith, a senior meat buyer in Portland and Mulvaney, a senior deli buyer in Commerce, were two of 49 individuals who were selected as finalists by the trade magazine from nominations that were submitted by more than 500 perishable supermarket suppliers. The vendors were asked to nominate buyers whose innovation, enthusiasm and overall excellence might qualify them as "Most Valuable Buyers."

Here's what the nominators had to say about each Unified buyer:

"Paul stands out as one who always treats us with respect and true honesty, which for some unknown reason seems to be lacking in today's industry. He's always fair in his dealings and protects his company and customers with the utmost of honor. He has always been an easygoing buyer to work with, which is not to say he's a pushover. Instead, it means we have the utmost respect and trust working with him."

"Cindy is an extraordinary individual worthy of this recognition. Although dealing with many 'like' brands, Cindy is extremely fair with each vendor she deals with and does not show favoritism toward any one vendor. In a pinch, Cindy will always try to 'squeeze you in,' knowing how today's business pace operates, and therefore will never pass up opportunities."

Congratulations, Paul and Cindy.
