(PORTLAND, Ore.) — Unified Western Grocers, in conjunction with the Oregon Grocery Industry Association, played a role in helping to "cool down" firefighters and other workers who were battling forest fires throughout Southern Oregon in late July and early August.
Unified, along with other Oregon food companies and suppliers, donated a supply of Popsicles and ice cream treats that were distributed to fire line workers looking for some cool relief between shifts. To facilitate the distribution process, products were delivered to Medford and Grants Pass retail stores and then taken directly to the fire lines by media personnel who had access to the firefighters' camps.
"It is our hope that this effort will let local communities know how much we continue to care about our neighbors throughout the state," said Joe Gilliam, president, Oregon Grocery Industry Association.
