 Unified Sponsors Summer Youth Program

(LOS ANGELES) — Thirty-one high school students recently completed an extensive 6-week summer internship at Unified Western Grocers, Inc., the fifth consecutive year that the $3.2 billion grocery wholesaler has sponsored a comprehensive Summer Youth Program for students who reside near its Los Angeles and Portland, Oregon offices and warehouses.

Among the extracurricular highlights of this year's Summer Youth Program were tours of Unified's Los Angeles manufacturing facilities (a bakery and fluid milk dairy), and the firm's Mechanized Warehouse, a 562,000 square-foot facility located in the City of Commerce. Students also heard special presentations on "Loss Prevention," "Careers in the Grocery Industry" and "What Goes Into Quality Assurance."

Retail members of Unified also participated in the Summer Youth program. At Gelson's Market in Calabasas and Vallarta Supermarket in Canoga Park, students toured each facility and met with key executives to learn about store operations and receive general career advice.

"We're particularly proud of our Summer Youth Program because it offers so much more than similar efforts throughout our industry," said Al Plamann, president and chief executive officer of Unified Western Grocers. "In addition to actual on-the-job experience, we show our students what it takes to be successful in the professional world. It's something they can draw on no matter what business or industry they choose to work for down the road."

Unified Western Grocers, Inc. is a retailer-owned grocery distributor that supplies independent retailers throughout the Western United States. Unified and its subsidiaries, which generated approximately $3.2 billion in sales during the 1999 fiscal year, offer independent retailers all the resources they need to compete in today's supermarket industry.
